    What Title IV Participation Means

Federal student aid, including Direct Loans and Pell Grants, flows through the Title IV program administered by the Department of Education. Schools that participate in Title IV have agreed to meet certain accreditation, financial, and administrative standards. Students enrolled at these schools can use federal aid to help pay their costs.

Trade and vocational schools can and do participate in Title IV. Many of the largest national trade school networks are Title IV eligible. However, not all are. Newer programs, smaller providers, and some specialized training companies operate independently of the federal system.

    How to Apply: The FAFSA

Students at Title IV-eligible trade schools access federal aid through the same process as any other student: by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at studentaid.gov. The FAFSA determines eligibility for Direct Loans, Pell Grants, and some state-level aid programs.

The FAFSA uses prior-year tax information and household financial data. It should be completed as early as possible after it opens each October for the following academic year.

What If Your School Is Not Title IV Eligible?

Students at non-Title-IV schools cannot access federal student loans or Pell Grants. Their options for financing their training include private student loans, employer tuition assistance, state workforce development grants, and out-of-pocket payment.

Private lenders each set their own school eligibility criteria. Some private lenders only work with accredited Title IV schools. Others, including LoanAmerica, evaluate schools independently using outcome-based criteria rather than relying solely on Title IV participation.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can trade school students get federal student loans?

Yes, if the school participates in the federal Title IV aid program. Students at Title IV-eligible schools can access Direct Unsubsidized Loans and potentially Pell Grants. Students at non-Title-IV schools cannot access federal aid.

How do I know if my trade school is Title IV eligible?

Search for your school on the Federal Student Aid database at studentaid.gov. Schools listed there are Title IV participants. You can also ask your school's financial aid office directly.

What is the FAFSA and do trade school students need to complete it?

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is the required application for any federal student aid including loans and grants. Trade school students at Title IV-eligible institutions must complete the FAFSA to access federal funds.
